With riders blitzing the course in just 35 seconds, the second round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Copenhagen, Denmark was all set to be an intense affair and it didn't disappoint. 

Reigning Olympic BMX Champion Maris Strombergs (LAT) won the mens event, the victory taking him into the lead of the 2010 World Cup standing after two events.  

Laëtitia le Corguillé (FRA) was the best in the women’s event. With this top performance the French rider wins her second World Cup race in a row, an impressive performance by the 2008 Olympic silver medallist.  

In a build up to the 2012 Olympic Games the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup races are particularly important and are attracting more and more riders. At the weekend, 161 elite riders from 29 countries started in Copenhagen on Europe’s only permanent BMX Supercross track. The event kicked off with a qualifying individual time trial, after which the best 64 men and 32 women went on to the next rounds (eight mottos for the men and four for the women).  

Maris Stromberg warned his competition with an impressive individual time trial result on Copenhagen’s challenging BMX track in 35.298 seconds. Australian Sam Willoughby was just a few hundreds of a second short with a time of 35.536 seconds. Those time trial results promised another great battle between these two favourites.  

But BMX racing is hard to predict and anything can happen in an explosive 30 seconds adrenaline-pumped race. Strombergs confirmed his winning form, taking a stylish overall victory in the final. Liam Phillips (GBR) created a surprise with his second place, as did Corben Sharrah (USA), who finished third. Willoughby and Connor Fields (USA) were unable to repeat their performances of the first World Cup round in Madrid, where they had finished first and second.  

Shanaze Reade (GBR) was one of the favourites for the women’s title in Copenhagen as was 2009 World Champion Sarah Walker (NZL). Walker looked strong and determined after being out for such a long time but Le Corguillé outperformed all in Copenhagen. Walker finished second and Aneta Hladíková (CZE) third.
